*****
Note, in place of the items above marked with  **  you can substitute a high quality canned food.
  I recommend Safeway Select Brand
, Turkey with rice and vegetables, Beef with rice and vegetables, or beef, bacon and cheese, and the liver combo.  This canned food is excellent and has no preservatives.

I rotate the canned food with the raw meat diet items each week;  raw one week and canned the next week,  fed along with
the other items which are fed constant daily, giving the dogs a slight variation of meals throughout the week.  Their diet need not be balanced every single day, but rather should be well balanced over time

Puppies should receive 1/2 cup raw meat (or canned) daily;  Adults should receive 1 Cup raw meat (or canned) daily along with their quality dry kibble and supplements.

You may feed one small meal every couple of days of raw turkey or chicken necks / backs, in place of the raw beef or canned food.  You may want to assist them initially by slightly chopping the bones up, which will help them better manage their new eating experience.  It won't take long and they will know exactly what to do with the bones for themselves!

It is important to note why the bones must be fed
raw. Cooking the bones causes them to become brittle, possibly  causing them to splinter when they are chewed and ingested.   Raw bones on the other hand are readily eaten by your puppy.  Cooking removes valuable nutrients from the bones, such as fat, which is beneficial for their coat and skin, and the bone marrow, (the soft inner material in the center of the bone), an important ingredient for your pup in the production of their own bone growth and development.

Caution:  Do NOT feed raw fish in any form.

Remember, variety is the spice of life!

~~Please note that there are many good diets that can be beneficial to the canine.  We wholeheartedly approve of the raw diet and also of  our modified raw diet, which is fed here at Schraderhaus K9.
Shown below is a diet description of our modified raw diet which is fed here in our own kennel. This diet has yielded excellent results, providing a wealth of benefits in the way of strengthened immune systems, increased stamina, and glossy, full condition of coat.  These benefits are clearly demonstrated by the vigor and health of our puppies, our young dogs, and our adults

A word of caution:  Immediately prior to or following strenuous exercise, do not feed         your puppy or allow it to drink large quantities of  water.  Shepherds can be prone to              torsion, or twisting of the gut, due to their large, deep chest and intestinal cavity.   They        can also fall victim to bloat,  if allowed to eat or drink to excess prior to or following hard      or strenuous exercise..

These occurrences present a most               serious and life threatening situation           requiring immediate veterinary attention.         <<<<<<<<==~~~

A good rule of thumb to follow when exercise is anticipated for your dog is to allow a
minimum of the  "half hour rule" time span to elapse, prior to and following your dog's          eating or drinking schedule...

For your new puppy's diet, you can change him over fairly readily to the 100% raw diet, if you so choose, almost immediately upon bringing him home to you. However, the key to a successful diet change is to do so very gradually.

   The younger the puppy,
the longer it should take to make the changes to their diet,  due to their delicate and immature digestive systems.

You might note that, contrary to what  you may believe, feeding a 100% raw meat diet alone is not a balanced diet for your canine, even though they are carnivores.  They also need to eat many other foods, as did their ancestors in the wild, the wolves and wild dogs of old.  This included many things besides meat,  borne out of necessity during times when hunting was very  scarce.  Their diet consisted of a variety of things such as pine needles, dirt, other animal droppings, grass, berries, root tubers, and of course left over kills from other animals.

These meals also consisted of the dead animal's stomach contents (tripe) which, along with the diets which were ingested by the animal it was about to make a meal of, also provided a variety of vitamins, enzymes and minerals that were essential to their growth and health in the wild.   Here at Schraderhaus K9 your puppy has been on a modified raw diet.  We strive to add much of the items into their diet that were available to the canine many years ago, and on which they survived for many centuries.  Your new puppy has been doing extremely well on our modified raw diet plan, which is outlined below...

Feed the following diet 2 X Daily for their meal
If your schedule permits, feeding your pup in 3 meals
daily, split into smaller portions...is even better for your puppy

**1 TB. plain or vanilla yogurt (You can rotate every few days with cottage cheese also). Yogurt is excellent for aiding digestion.  It contributes greatly to the health and flora of their digestive system,  helping to keep it in good balance and in excellent working condition.

 **1/4 C. raw meat diet

(The raw meat blend used here at Schraderhaus K9 consists of beef heart, beef liver, beef kidney, and beef meat trimmings,)
**Raw Vegetables, processed in a food processor
carrots, kale, spinach, lettuce, broccoli and really any veggies that have gone just past where they would be eaten by people.  You can mix the veggies up in large quantities.  Then separate into smaller portions of about a week's worth of veggies, putting them into small freezer bags and freeze.  You can then just thaw out enough for several days,  adding them into each meal as you need the items.
**Quality dry kibble

**Add enough dry kibble per meal to satisfy their hunger and to keep their body condition correct for their age.  This will vary, but we caution you not to overfeed your puppy, or allow them to become fat;  keeping the pup slightly on the leaner side is better for them than to allow them to become too heavy.  (A good indication of proper body condition is to just be able to feel the last rib of their ribcage when you run your hand over their sides.)

We use Nutra Nuggets dry kibble (Puppy formula for puppies younger than 4 months, and **Adult Lamb Meal and Rice after 4 months of age and as they get older...mixing the lamb and rice into the puppy food gradually over a period of time until they are completely switched over to the adult food at approximately 4 months of age.
 ** Note:
Important recommendation when
feeding puppy chow dry kibble....

We recommend that your puppy be switched from puppy food to adult food by age 4 months to insure that the growth your puppy puts into his bones is done at a steady and more consistent rate.  This will allow your pup to develop strong, solid and healthy bones, and will make your dog less prone to arthritis and many bone disorders such as OCD, which can cause problems for them even at an early age as well as in their later years...

Nutra Nuggets dog food is available at Fred Meyer,
and at Costco.  Cosco also carries their own

quality brand
of lamb and rice, Kirkland Lamb and Rice.
Both the above brands of Lamb and Rice are
corn free.

Using these brands of kibble I have had no eating issues, nor any unthrifty body condition or skin disorders on my dogs, and so I recommend these dry foods to those of you who choose to feed dry kibble in the diet.  I believe they are a very high quality food, packed with quality ingredients and using little or no preservatives;  containing Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. as well as Glucosamine and Chondroitin for preserving and repairing bones, connective tissue and joints.

Add the following supplements / foods

1 X Daily to one meal

***Add A small quantity of hot water spoon blend the meal to a palatable consistency
**1 tsp. cod liver oil
**1 tsp. flax seed oil
**1 tsp. Solid Gold Sea Meal   organic Seal Meal is good as well, or contact www.solidgoldhealth.com)
**1/2 tsp. bone meal

**You may also add 1 raw egg daily,
**Potato in small quantities, as well as pumpkin for fiber and bowel regularity
**Fruits such as pears, apples, berries (in small quantities as large amounts may cause loose stools)
Raw, Meaty Bones ,Bones, Bones!!  (See Description Below)

 **Vitamin C tablets (Ascorbic acid)
We use and recommend Ester-C, which has been shown to be more easily absorbed and more efficiently used
by the body.

500 mg daily, increasing the dosage slowly as he gets older up to 1000 mg. daily as his bowels can tolerate, to the age of 6 months.  Slowly increase the dosage to 1500-2000 mg. daily from 6 months of age into adulthood.  If stools become too loose, back off on the quantity and again slowly increase until they can tolerate the larger dosage. This vitamin has shown promise for developing a more solid, dense bone in your young animal due to slow and steady bone growth.  Continue this potent anti-oxidant into old age for your dog.

Feed your dog Raw Meaty Bones on a regular basis

In addition to the meals listed above, We recommend that you feed your puppy, as well as your adult dog, plenty of Raw Meaty Bones on a regular basis

Raw Meaty Bones  are extremely beneficial for your young pup as it grows and begins to produce it's bone structure as it grows and matures.   There are many beneficial gifts that your puppy will derive from eating raw meaty bones.  Supplying your pup with raw bones for him to eat is an excellent way to insure a healthy production of strong and solid bones for his later health in life and to help guard against hip dysplasia and arthritis.  Raw bones are safe for your puppy, but not the cooked bones of chicken or turkey, as cooking will cause them to splinter when they are eaten.  Cooking also removes much of the benefits they will derive from the raw bones, such as vitamins and minerals, as well as additional fat which is for the most part cooked off during the cooking process. Fat has been shown to be an excellent source of oils containing vitamins A and D for healthy and problem free skin and coat. The  raw bone marrow has been credited for building strength into the pups own bones as well, and gives him a boost of easily and readily available protein in a form that is the best way for him to absorb it into his system and make it usable to the pup as he grows. .Bone marrow is excellent for proper development of their own bones and joints, insuring their proper overall structural growth.     Large knuckle bones, which are available from your butcher, also provide excellent benefit to your puppy as well as your adult dog.  Raw Meaty Bones   will provide them with great chewing exercise, as well as overall bodily exercise for most of the muscles in their body.  This is achieved as they grasp the bone between their paws, tensing up their muscles all over in an effort to hold, chew on, and keep the bone in their grasp.  This is much the same as a stretching or isometric exercise, and they will be focused entirely on this bone for many hours.  This provides them with nothing short of sheer enjoyment and works to keep the pup's body in excellent hard, lean and firm condition.  It is also a very good way to keep those young pups occupied and out of trouble...at least for a while!

Raw Meaty Bones   are a very inexpensive way for your dog to keep his mouth full of clean, sparkling white teeth, along with healthy gums and fresh breath Clean teeth and healthy gums will contribute to his overall health and body condition, promoting a longer healthier life, free of gum disease and eating problems as they become older dogs.

My recommendation for feeding your dog is that you make each meal a happy and anticipated routine event for them. Feed him at (close to) the same time each day, and feed as a meal, not by giving him table scraps from the table. This will teach him to be a good eater, and will discourage him from becoming a beggar at your dinner table. It is best that you feed the dog separate from other animals you have.  This allows you to monitor their food intake as well as prevent unnecessary arguments over the food.

You can also make up some great treats containing many of the above items.  Be creative, mixing up what your dog likes best.  You can prepare and mix the items like cookie dough, then roll them out and cut them up like you would small cookies, baking them and making up small freezer bags full of little "doggie cookie treats".  Keep these stored in your freezer until you are ready to use them.  They will be readily available to you and your dog whenever you may need them.  These make excellent training treats, and you can use them each time you take your puppy out to work with him.

Your dog will Love you for it!
